Reboot – the importance of not giving up

There are times in our lives when everything seems to be going just right, and times when everything we turn our hands to goes wrong. Of course the reality is somewhere in the middle and it’s just that when we drift towards one of those two extremes it captures our attention and we see only the good or the bad.

I fell off my normal fitness routine because of illness which then led into a different one and before I knew it I was out of the habit and back in the situation of needing to start again. I was also reminded of the vision I had set for myself, which included a more overall type of fitness, not just the muscle gaining that I’d focussed on recently and I realised that I’d allowed the balance to drift.

So now I’m working back towards where I wanted to be. For the last few weeks I’ve been starting to cycle into work instead of taking the car. It’s no big deal, taking me about half an hour or so to cycle instead of the fifteen to twenty minutes in the car. I’m not yet cycling every day because I know better than to try and leap in with both feet. Instead I started by just two days a week, and those two days would be in theory on my rest days from the main exercise program. That is still the plan, at least for the starting point. Ultimately I’m looking to work up to cycling four days and to mix in both road and mountain bikes with a choice of routes as appropriate to the bike. I even have plans to job one way (cycle in, jog home then a day or so later jog in and cycle home).

It’s easy to allow excuses, and I’m being careful not to overdo it, so I’ve dropped back on my normal routine while I allow my body to adjust to the cycling. Next week I start again on my normal routine. In fact tomorrow I will be starting that again.

How do you cope with change? Does illness throw you off track? Are you on track for your dreams?
